What is Family Share?

Enter our web contest! Submit your  original garden art,  square foot, lasagna or close crop garden photos. Winner of selected photos will receive a prize valued at $25.

Family share is a simple concept.  Families and
individuals in Humboldt agree to square foot
garden,  grow and harvest vegetables, organic fruit and wild berries and mushrooms. Some families who want to, raise chickens for eggs organic and free range during the day.
.
We get together once a week for a pot luck from our yields and to share surplus family grown herbs, vegetables, fruit and eggs. Twice a year the wise women gather with families to teach and share the work of canning and drying surplus harvest. The participants then split the end result. When and if there is excess it will be donated to local small food pantries to help other poor families.

This is different from Community Sustainable
agriculture or farms who sell at farmers market . Family share members never exchange money for food. Family share is about preserving and passing on traditions, creating local food safety and security for ALL Humboldt/ Del Norte families from any culture, tradition or ethnicity and providing opportunity for each and every member to improve the quality and access to good food no matter what ones income.

Square foot vegetable gardening means fewer weeds, no more tilling, no more thinning and no more digging. . Whether you live in a house, mobile home park, apartment or a room with a terrace, square foot vegetable gardening is the easiest way to assure fresh vegetables for your family.

You do not use any fertilizers or pesticides because it is easy to protect. The physical hard work is eliminated and people with mental or physical limitations can all prepare and maintain such a garden.

There is virtually no chance of over watering because of the control you have over garden squares. There is no thinning involved because you only plant the exact amount of seeds or seedlings you want. Square foot vegetable gardening produces a large yield in a small space.
